Outdoor workers continued their routines Wednesday despite the low air quality and orange skies that have resulted from the Canadian wildfires.
While officials recommended people stay inside, some who work outside told News 12 they are at a higher risk.
"When you're really moving around and hustling, it's hard to breathe,” said landscaper Jay Wasksky.
“When I was in New York City yesterday, I saw the sun and I could just tell there was something different about the air,” said truck driver Joseph Magray.
Rutgers University Environmental and Occupational Health Dr. Robert Laumbach said it's been decades since air pollution exposure levels were this high.
"Reduce the amount of physical activity or exertion because the more air we breathe, the more air pollution we breathe in."
Laumbach advises people to stay indoors as much possible and recommends wearing masks, especially if you suffer from asthma or COPD.
The skies will remain orange because all that smoke is absorbing the light from the sun.
