The gunman who killed 50 people and injured dozens more in Orlando on Sunday morning was formerly married to a New Jersey native.

Sitora Yusufiy married the shooter in 2009. She tells reporters that the marriage lasted only four months. She says that shortly after she moved to be with him in Florida, he became abusive and she saw that he had mental instabilities.

Yusufiy says he was bipolar and filled with hate when his tempers flared.

She says her parents rescued her from the marriage and took her back to New Jersey. They officially divorced in 2011. 

Edison police were staged outside of her parents' home Sunday to help protect their privacy. 

Yusuify now lives in Colorado with her fiance. She says she has not had any contact with her ex-husband in more than seven years.
