A Newark ordinance restricting the hours of restaurants in crime hotspots has some owners and customers crying foul. Fast-food establishments in 17 designated neighborhoods must now close their doors at 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
The measure comes after the fatal shooting of an off-duty Newark policeman inside a Chicken Shack on Lyons Avenue. Several business owners say the ordinance will cut into their profits. However, some customers say it's worth a try if it takes a bite out of crime. The ordinance will take effect 20 days after it's signed by Mayor Cory Booker.
