Cranford police say that they have used the opiate antidote Narcan nine times, with a 100 percent success rate.
Since July 2014, every primary police vehicle in Cranford has been equipped with Narcan kits, which are used to reverse the effects of a heroin overdose. Heroin use in New Jersey has prompted the need for Narcan.
In Mercer County, a founder of an addiction support group has seen the effects.
"Since Narcan was introduced Nov. 1, Hamilton Township in Mercer County has had the most saves in the county," says Kevin Meara.
In June, Gov. Chris Christie announced that police and first responders would be able to buy Narcan at a discounted rate.
