News 12's entertainment reporter John Bathke sat down with music icon and New Jersey’s own Gloria Gaynor.
Gaynor’s biggest hit song, the anthem, "I Will Survive" is much more than a title. A new documentary on the Grammy winner's life just made its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. "Gloria Gaynor: I Will Survive" focuses on her uphill struggle to release her first album in many years - a gospel project called "Testimony" in 2019.
Gaynor says she faced resistance from a music establishment that pigeonholed her as a disco artist. She eventually found a label and the album won a Grammy Award. She also talked about what it was like to see a side of herself that's not on stage play out in front of an audience.
Fans in New Jersey can see Gaynor live in concert at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood on Sept. 16.

Theater at the beach this summer

Also, a lot of people are heading to the Jersey Shore for the holiday weekend. And there's theater to be found at the beach, not only the sun and the sand. Surflight Theatre in Beach Haven is a summertime staple in Long Beach Island and puts on performances all summer long. For more information, visit surflight.org.
