Officials: Wildfire burns at least 2,500 acres in Wharton State Forest

Officials say that the fire is 25% contained as of 9 p.m.

A wildfire has burned at least 2,500 acres of land in Wharton State Forest in Shamong Township, Burlington County, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

Officials say that the fire was 25% contained as of 9 p.m.

Multiple roadways in the forest are closed as crews work to extinguish the fire. Officials also say that Tuckerton Road is closed from Carranza Road to Washington Turnpike. Carranza Road is closed from Forked Neck Road to Tuckerton Road. Bulldozer Road is closed, along with Hampton Road.

Phillip M. Costello Preparatory Academy was evacuated, along with the Lower Forge Campground. The fire is also threatening five structures at this time.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Officials are also warning the public not to fly drones in the area of the fire.
