Vineland Public Schools closed
Thursday "out of an abundance of caution," with
district officials saying there were threats circulating on social media about
the high school.
The district
posted on
Facebook around 10 p.m. to say all
buildings would be closed with students and staff staying
home.
The school district says a social
media threat circulating about a possible school shooting prompted the
district's decision to close for the day.
The district said in a statement, "The district was informed of a threat circulating on
social media regarding a possible school shooting. The Vineland Police
Department is investigating. We follow all VPD recommendations to ensure a
safe and secure environment for all students, staff, and visitors and take all
threats seriously. Decisions regarding Friday's classes will be made and
shared later today."
“Terrified, she was scared,” says
parent Jorge Quiles. “We don’t need
none of that in Vineland. This is the first time we’ve had a threat like this.
“They did a good job of closing just in case
there was any threat. Yes, they did a good job closing.”
The district says there was no
virtual instruction for the day. The closure includes its private
provider’s preschools.
News 12 reached out
to the district and police for more information.
It’s unclear whether there is
school Friday. The district says it will make a decision later
today.
