District administrators are conducting an aggressive investigation into potential grade changing at Fort Lee High School.
Superintendent Raymond Bandlow confirmed grade alterations have been made for students as far back as six years ago. Bandlow says the changes were made on transcripts and reports cards, some of which were sent to colleges for admission applications.
According to Bandlow, the grade manipulation included both the raising of scores and the deletion of low grades from student records.
The superintendent first learned of the controversy two weeks ago from a guidance counselor. Fallout began Wednesday afternoon with the suspension of Jay Berman, the principal at Fort Lee High School.
?Mr. Berman has been relieved of his duties pending the outcome of this investigation,? says Bandlow. ?We felt the need to relieve him while we?re investigating. I?m certainly not prepared to talk about his responsibility or not.?
The investigation is not over. School officials say they plan to go back and check grades for the past several years to see how many students were affected. Brandlow is also contacting schools that may have received manipulated student records.
