Officials: Neptune police sergeant shot, killed ex-wife
A Neptune Township police sergeant has been arrested for allegedly shooting his ex-wife to death after chasing her in his car, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.
Investigators say Phillip Seidle, 51, shot his ex-wife Tamara Seidle, 50, several times after allegedly chasing her for several miles in his car. The Seidles' 7-year-old daughter was in the car with her father at the time.
First Assistant Prosecutor Marc LeMieux says the couple's divorce was finalized on May 27. Custody of the couple's nine children was awarded to their mother, which may have led to the dispute. LeMieux says the car chase started in Neptune Township and ended when Tamara Seidle crashed her car on Sewall Avenue in Asbury Park.
Sgt. Seidle then allegedly got out of his car and fired at his wife several times while she sat in her car. Several Asbury Park police officers quickly responded to the scene. Many were in the area already due to an unrelated traffic accident nearby.
Witnesses say it appears that Tamara Seidle was trying to get out of the car, possibly to alert these nearby officers, when she was shot.
Once officers arrived, Sgt. Seidle apparently held the gun to his own head, leading to a 30-minute standoff with police. Officers were able to get the Seidles' 7-year-old daughter to safety during that time.
Tamara Seidle was pronounced dead a short time later. The couple's daughter was not injured.
Sgt. Seidle surrendered and was taken into custody and will be charged with first degree murder, among other charges.
LeMieux says the officers on scene knew Sgt. Seidle and their decision not to use force is under investigation.
Investigators are aware of several pictures and video clips of the incident circulating around social media. Anyone who may have any pictures of videos of the incident is asked to turn them over to investigators.
It's unclear when Sgt. Seidle is expected to make his first appearance in court.
