Monmouth County health officials say that there was a potential case of measles exposure at an Englishtown restaurant.
Officials say that a person believed to be infected with the illness was at Rosalita’s Roadside Cantina on Route 9 in Englishtown April 19. Anyone inside the restaurant between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on that day could have been exposed.
Symptoms of measles include rash, high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. Measles can cause serious complications such as pneumonia and swelling of the brain. Symptoms could develop as late as May 10 in this case.
Measles cases are nearing record numbers across the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC reports 71 new cases, bringing this year’s total to 626 – just shy of the 2014 record of 667 cases.
New Jersey has seen 14 cases of measles this year – including the most recent case in Englishtown. No one in the U.S. has died from measles this year, according to health officials.
Union County officials are giving free measles vaccines to children. Children ages 1 to 19 who are on Medicaid, uninsured or underinsured are eligible.
Appointments are required and can be made by calling 908-965-3627 or 908-965-3868. The clinic is on Parker Road in Elizabeth.
