Police officers in Carlstadt rescued three people from a burning house fire.

The officers were initially called to a home on the 600 block of First Street around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday for reports of someone having difficulty breathing. But when they arrived at the house, they say smoke and fire coming from the first floor.

Officials say the officers were able to get one person out from the first floor. The officers then went back in and found two more people on the second floor and were able to get them out safely.

"Our officers consistently demonstrate remarkable courage, running toward danger to protect and save lives,” Police Chief Thomas Cox wrote in a statement.

One of the residents was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center to be treated for injuries. Two Carlstadt firefighters were also treated for minor injuries.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
