The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection says six beaches and bays in Monmouth and Ocean counties that were closed due to excessive levels of fecal bacteria in the water have now reopened.
The affected beaches included:
- Roosevelt Ave Beach in Deal
- Elberon Beach Club in Long Branch
- Barnegat and Lavallette beaches in Ocean County
The closures were lifted just after 3 p.m. Wednesday.
A DEP official tells News 12 that beaches are tested every Monday and re-tested on Tuesday. The official said that any time a sample has more than the standard 104 units of bacteria found in human or animal waste, the advisories go into effect.
Elevated levels of bacteria can also be caused by stormwater runoff.
