Fire officials say a 5-alarm fire tore through four stores in a Bergenfield commercial strip Saturday.
They say most of the stores were empty and those that were not were evacuated.
Firefighters say they faced challenges putting out the fire. There was heavy smoke and the fire was moving in two directions, making it hard to contain.
The fire started in the back of the building between two stores and affected stores along Bedford Avenue and South Washington Avenue.
No one was injured.
