Officer Joseph Sandwith, 27, suffered a leg injury after attempting to arrest two men who police say were selling cocaine from their vehicle.
Officials say Eric Duncan, 36, tried to drive off from the scene. They add that after he was nearly run over, Sandwith fired three shots at the car, hitting Duncan in the hip.
Duncan's passenger Willie Richburg, 31, reportedly ran off before being tackled by police and arrested. Witnesses deny this claim, but state that Richburg was beaten by police after his arrest. Jersey City Chief Thomas Corney says only necessary force was used to subdue Richburg, and that Sandwith's leg injuries are connected to the car hitting him.
Another police-involved shooting in Newark occurred several hours earlier involving a suspect who allegedly pulled a gun and pointed it at cops. An officer then fired two shots at the suspect. Two suspects are in custody while two others escaped.
