The deadline to get a Real ID is quickly approaching. From May 7 on, travelers will be required to have a Real ID to board domestic flights.
If your New York state driver's license does not have a star or a flag in the top corner, you do not have a Real ID.
With the looming deadline, certain Department of Motor Vehicles locations will be opening appointments on Saturdays to accommodate Real ID requests.
The Bronx District Office on East Fordham Road will be open on Saturdays from April 5 through June 28 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for Real ID appointments only. The appointment window will open at the end of March.
A Real ID will be required for domestic flights within the U.S. and to enter certain federal buildings. A valid and unexpired passport can also be used for domestic flights and is required for international travel.
WHAT IS A REAL ID?
A Real ID is a federally compliant DMV-issued driver's license, permit or identification card.
HOW TO GET A REAL ID?
You'll need to submit specific documents, including two proofs of New York state residency and proof of your legal name. Other documents are also required and can be found on the DMV website.
A Real ID must be obtained in person at a DMV office, as a new picture will need to be taken. You cannot use the same photo on your regular ID.
Appointments are strongly encouraged. The cost is the same as a regular ID.
