(AP) - The fight for same-sex marriage in New Yorkis moving forward.
New York Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell through sometimes fierydebate ushered in a bipartisan vote Tuesday in the Democrat-ledAssembly that would allow same-sex marriage in New York.
O'Donnell, the gay brother of entertainer Rosie O'Donnell, sayshe's been engaged to his partner for 28 years and wants to givemarriage a shot.
Assemblyman Michael Benjamin, a black man from the Bronx, sayshe objects to comparing gay marriage to racial civil rights. Hesays the measure will put government on a collision course withreligious freedom.
Democratic Assemblyman Dove Hikind of Brooklyn, a Jewish leader,says he has to follow God and God isn't a politician and doesn'tflip-flop on issues.
Now the focus switches to the Democrat-controlled Senate.
