Nutley teens came to the aid Wednesday of seniors and others trapped indoors by the snow incapable of shoveling themselves out.
The teenagers are part of a program run by the township's public safety department called SOS, or Shovel Out Seniors. The program teams the youngsters with elderly and disabled residents who are often on fixed incomes and incapable of or unable to afford clearing the walk.
"It means I can go out and get my mail outside on the porch, means I can go out back and be safe when I take my dog out," says blind senior Josephine Luland.
The townships ask the seniors to work out a nominal fee with the teens, which often works out to tip money. Many of the teens don't charge anything, and say the job comes with its own payment.
"It's such a good feeling helping them out," says volunteer and Nutley High School junior Matt Russo.
