Nurses accused Menlo Park veteran?s home managers of union busting Wednesday, setting the stage for a possible strike. The nurses are conducting what they call ?informational picketing? outside the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Park Home. They say the home?s management company isn?t upholding its end of an already agreed upon contract. Many nurses said they suspect it?s because managers want to bust the union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).A particular point of contention is the home?s sick day policy. The nurses say management is asking them to bring notes every time they call in sick. Union President Shirley Lewis says her members are complaining that they?re being written up and suspended when they violate managers? requests for the notes. The policy is in violation of the contract. If the nurses do strike, 120 assistants, 43 nurses and many food service employees are also expected to walk off the job.
