Tenants at the West View Towers high-rise in North Bergen say they haven’t had heat or hot water in weeks, prompting the township to step in and impose hefty fines.
Mayor Nick Sacco and township commissioners have now stepped in. They say they're aggressively advocating on behalf of the tenants to resolve the issues.
In a letter released by the mayor's office, heat and hot water were supposed to be restored by Tuesday or, at the latest, by Wednesday morning. But News 12 was told that some tenants are still without heat and hot water on Wednesday evening.
News 12 spoke with township officials earlier about a $2,000 daily fine per unit that they plan to impose on the building's owner if the problems aren't fixed "expeditiously.”
“They promised us that it would be on by this morning. This morning, they had the heat on and the pipes burst, so we're going after them now again,” says Sacco.
“For the days that they were without hot water or heat, they can get a deduction off their rent. So that will compel the owner to get this fixed,” says township attorney Thomas Kobin.
West View Towers is 22 stories tall with nearly 300 units. The building is privately owned. Officials say this isn't the first time there've been issues with this building, but these are the most drastic measures the town has ever had to take.
