A New Jersey nonprofit organization that serves the state’s shelters and soup kitchens has served its 1 millionth meal.
Meals with a Mission’s milestone was reached over the last eight years that the organization has been operating.
News 12 New Jersey visited the group while volunteers prepared meatloaves to feed the hungry. The food will be packed and frozen before going to those in need.
Those who run the nonprofit say that the milestone is bittersweet.
"It means there were a million meals in the last eight years that were needed by people less fortunate than us,” says Rich Jarocki.
Over 300 volunteers cook five days a week for the organization.
"We tell all our volunteers that it's only meals that you would serve on your own table at home,” says Carol Walsh.
The meals go to 25 different soup kitchens and pantries in Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Passaic Counties.
