A police officer who fatally shot a South Brunswick man after a four-hour standoff in 2013 won't face charges.
The Attorney General's office announced Wednesday that a state grand jury took no action against the Old Bridge officer, who was part of a Middlesex County Special Operations Response Team.
Twenty-eight-year-old Andrew Murnieks was killed inside his home in November 2013 after a standoff in which he allegedly brandished a large blade and yelled threats at officers.
Murnieks' mother had told police her son was schizophrenic and wasn't taking his medication.
An investigation revealed that after officers forced their way into the house, Murnieks assaulted one officer with a heavy metal wrench and tried to grab his handgun.
The officer fired one shot that hit Murnieks in the chest.
