New Jersey Transit issued an alert Sunday advising residents to be prepared for delays.
It said that customers traveling to and from New York Penn Station will experience 15-minute delays on weekdays and 30-minute delays on weekends until further notice.
The delays come on the shoulders of two recent Amtrak derailments and its ongoing repairs to tracks and signals under New York Penn Station. Amtrak is starting repairs that are scheduled to last through the summer.
Amtrak CEO Wick Moorman explained to state legislators in Trenton that there will be two to three major disruptions.
"All we can do is go in and make sure it runs as well as it possibly can,” said Moorman.
Because of the delays, commuters say they are not getting their money's worth, and have started a campaign called No Pay May.
Supporters are telling riders not to pay for fares starting Monday until the service is back to normal.
New Jersey Transit has no plans for refunds, saying providing transit is expensive and a fare covers only a fraction of the cost.
