New Jersey Transit announced a plan to close the Kingsland rail station in Lyndhurst.

The station, located on Ridge Road, will close in 2025, but not before a newer and updated station opens.

NJ Transit says a rail station will be opening on Court and Delafield avenues. Service is expected to begin before Kingsland closes to avoid any disruptions.

According to NJ Transit, Kingsland station was built in 1918 and has not been open for the public for the past 15 years.

The current station creates equity concerns as it is not ADA accessible, has insufficient parking and faces passenger circulation and experience issues.

The new station, which is a three-minute drive from the Kingsland one, will be much safer and for riders. It will provide high-level platforms, new elevators and other accommodations that will enhanced travel experience for all customers.

If the Kingsland station closes, the building would still be used by NJ Transit for rail operations.

NJ Transit will host two in-person public hearings to discuss the future of the Kingsland Station. The hearings are expected to take place on Aug. 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lyndhurst Town Hall's Council Chambers.
