All children attending preschool or licensed day care centers in New Jersey will need flu shots starting in September. Preschoolers are being targeted because their developing immune systems make them as susceptible to flu complications as senior citizens. Health officials say they also are more likely than older kids to spread the virus. New Jersey will also require preschoolers to get a pneumococcal vaccine. Sixth-graders must be vaccinated against meningitis and get a booster shot for whooping cough. Some parents are pushing lawmakers for a bill that would give families the right to skip required immunizations because of a "philosophical objection."
