When it comes to determining which state loves ice cream the most, New Jersey melts the competition.

According to a new study by Innerbody Research, New Jersey has been named the most ice cream-obsessed state in America. From soft serve on the boardwalk to hand-dipped waffle cones and sundaes at local creameries, people in the Garden State have a serious sweet tooth when it comes to frozen desserts.

“The average American eats around 4 gallons of ice cream each year, making it one of the country’s most enduring dessert habits — and supporting an industry worth roughly $11.6 billion,” the study says.

The research also shows that while New Jersey’s love for ice cream churns past the rest of the country, a few Northeast states aren’t far behind. Delaware, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York are also near the top of the list.

As for flavor, strawberry is listed as the nationwide favorite, with chocolate chip — New Jersey’s favorite — and cookie dough trailing slightly behind.

The Innerbody study analyzed search data trends in all 50 states, looking at brand loyalty, regional preferences and flavor choices.
