As President George W. Bush gets ready to announce his possible troop pullout plan Thursday night, many New Jersey residents have mixed feelings about the withdrawal.
Earlier in the week, Gen. David Petraeus, commander of the U.S. military in Iraq, announced as many as 30,000 troops could be sent home by next summer. Petraeus assured Congress the withdrawal would not jeopardize the security gains the U.S. has achieved in Iraq.
Some NJ residents say enough has been done in Iraq and it is time for troops to come home. Others feel it is too early for troops to come home and worry there won?t be many troops left to keep order in the troubled country.
Meanwhile, Senate Democratic leaders rejected Petraeus? plan, saying the troop reduction doesn?t go far enough. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says Democrats will offer amendments ?to change the course of the war? when the Senate takes up a defense bill next week.
President Bush is set to address the nation at 9 p.m.
