Some wacky summer weather brought thunderstorms, heavy rains, wind and hail to the Garden State Monday afternoon.
Pockets of sun interspersed the menacing clouds, pounding rain and hail storms throughout the early part of the day.
At one point, a water spout formed over Barnegat Bay. Leigh O?Donnell and her fiancé Ray Botham were able to capture the spout on camera.
?I thought it was a boat on fire at first,? Botham says. ?And then it just grew.?
O?Donnell says they get to see a lot of strange weather since they live on the water. However, she says they?ve never seen anything quite like the water spout.
The couple never took cover because the water spout seemed to lose steam as it approached. ?If it had continued its path toward us, we would have locked up in the house,? O?Donnell says. ?But at that point, it wasn?t too scary yet. We were just in awe of this thing that we had never seen before.?
The U.S. Coast Guard says water spouts are rare in the bay. No boaters were harmed by Monday?s wild weather.
The water wasn?t the only area affected by the storm. Lightning hit the chimney of a house in Teaneck, sending bricks flying into the streets. Neighbors say nothing was destroyed and no one was injured.
One Teaneck resident said the manic weather is better than the 90-degree temperatures weeks ago.
No outages, downed trees or power lines have been reported.
