Relatives of 9/11 victims are furious after learning the annual Sept. 11th memorial service will not take place at Ground Zero.
According to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, there is not enough space at Ground Zero because of ongoing construction. The memorial service has been held at Ground Zero every year since the attacks in 2001. However, the city plans to hold the ceremony in Zuccott Park this year, next to the World Trade Center site.
Thirty-seven residents from Middletown were killed in the 9/11 attacks. Many residents from that area say the remembrance service must be held at Ground Zero.
?That?s where it happened, that?s where it should be,? resident Pam Quartararo said. ?I mean, they can have a memorial here in Middletown, which they always do, but it should be at Ground Zero.?
Families of many 9/11 victims have written Spitzer and Bloomberg in an effort to get the ceremony moved back to Ground Zero. If the governor and mayor don?t change their minds, the families say they will apply for a permit to have their own service at the site.
