New Jersey is remembering dozens of sailors who died serving our country.

The sinking of the USS Thresher occurred 56 years ago and remains the worst submarine disaster in US Naval history.

The accident happened on April 10, 1963 as the sub was undergoing sea trials, leaving 129 people dead, including seven from New Jersey.

The Thresher was a new boat when a pipe burst as the sub was 900 feet down, about 300 miles off Cape Cod.

The New Jersey sailors lost at sea were Robert Kearney and Frank Malinowski, both from Glen Ridge, Norman Lanouette, of Newark, Karl McDonough, of Camden, Pervis Robison, of Nutley, Burnett Shotwell, of Morristown, and Roger Van Pelt, of Cranford.

There will be a permanent memorial to those lost at Arlington National cemetery. It's currently in the planning stages.
