Catalytic converter thefts are on the rise across New Jersey, according to officials. South Brunswick police are asking the public to be on the lookout.
Police say there have been 29 thefts reported in southern Middlesex County since May 21. It’s a quick “hit and take” crime that can cost someone thousands of dollars.
Catalytic converters are part of a car's exhaust system and the metals they're made of are extremely valuable.
News 12 New Jersey asked officials what drivers can do to lessen their chance of getting robbed. They suggest parking in a garage. And if you don’t have a garage, park under a light or in front of a building.
South Brunswick Police Lt. Gene Rickle says products like shields, cages or other lock systems can make your catalytic converter more difficult for thieves to steal.
