After winning the election, President-elect Barack Obama made a promise to his two daughters during his acceptance speech: They will be getting a puppy.

Now, Americans are sharing their opinions of what kind of dog the Obama family should get, including an obedience trainer and dog owner from New Jersey.

According to David Horowitz, the Obamas must be careful to select a puppy that is not too dominant for their girls or too shy to play.

"You don't want to pick the dominant, the one that comes charging over to you and starts gnawing on your fingers,? Horowitz says. ?That's going to be the dominant puppy and they'll not only be dominant with their litter mates, they'll also try to be dominant with the family. You also don't want to feel sorry for the one that's off in the corner that's very timid and shy and is not sociable with the other puppies in the litter."

Other veterinarians and dog experts recommend a Labrador puppy for the first family because the breed is playful and good with children.

President Bush currently has two Scottish terriers named Barney and Miss Beazley. Many former presidents have also had cats.
