Investigators say a Fort Lee man opened fire inside a federal building in Manhattan Friday, killing a security guard before taking his own life.
Officials say 68-year old Kevin Downing has been identified as the gunman. Downing lived alone in a home on Harvard Place.
The Varick Street building where the shooting occurred holds a regional office of the Department of Labor. Downing was reportedly fired back in 1999 from a job with the department.
There are reports that Downing had complained of wasteful spending on the part of the Labor Department and felt that was the reasoning for his departure.
Neighbors on Harvard Place say that Downing lost his girlfriend to breast cancer three years ago. Several residents described him as a nice, quiet man. They say that he didn't speak of his former job and only knew him as a real estate agent.
The guard who was killed has been identified as Idrissa Camara. It's unclear if Camara was targeted, or what Downing's motive may have been.
