Investigators in New Jersey say they are doing their best to stay a step ahead of sex criminals, especially those involved in Internet crimes.
Officials say there has been an increase of people being arrested on charges of child pornography, which may be due to an increase in awareness. The Center for Missing and Exploited Children says leads phoned into its cyber tip hotline have more than doubled from 119,000 in 2009 to more than 326,000 last year.
The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, or I-CAC, investigates chat rooms, news groups, bulletin boards and peer-to-peer file sharing networks where kiddie porn can be found.
Detective Sgt. Stan Field, of the New Jersey state police, tells News 12 New Jersey, "The technology changes every day, so it's very difficult to do this. We're constantly training to learn new ways, new trends of what it is that criminals are doing."
Besides looking for child porn suspects, members of the task force say they are always trying to identify and rescue the children who appear in the material. Over the last two years, they say they managed to find and save six children who were being used to make porn.
