Long waits in emergency departments are a big problem in the Garden State and now many hospitals are focusing on controlling their crowds and preparing for disasters.
Doctors at the Fuld Emergency Department in Trenton say overcrowding is frustrating for patients and the hospital staff. Overcrowding is one of the reasons New Jersey received a C-plus from the National Institute of Medicine when it comes to emergency care.
Hospitals are now working together to streamline the process so they can see more patients and better handle disasters. According to one doctor, there will be an online system available that all hospitals will be linked to in the event of overcrowding or disasters. He says the system will allow the hospitals to communicate and even farm out patients as necessary.
