New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy and Sen. Bob Menendez met with Latino leaders in Newark to speak about gun safety.
They addressed the El Paso shooting and reports that the gunman likely targeted the Hispanic community.
Menendez says he knows that no single law can stop every tragedy, but says laws still save lives.
"We are the only country in the developed world that makes it so easy to amass an arsenal of deadly weapons," Menendez said. "It's time for that to change."
The senator also explained that gun reforms work in other countries.
Murphy warned that "something must be done" before what happened in El Paso happens in the Garden State.
Menendez hopes that Congress will close loopholes in gun sales and limit access to high-capacity magazines.
