Beekeepers say a growing mystery could have big consequences in the Garden State.
This time of year, beekeeper Bob Hughes says his bee hives should be buzzing, but instead they are only half the size. ?They?re not in the hive and no one seems to know why,? Hughes said. He adds that 50 percent of his bees have disappeared, along with the profits he makes selling honey.
Beekeepers throughout New Jersey and 27 other states have noticed the trend of declining bees. The Department of Agriculture has yet to figure out a reason for the trend.
Farmers are also feeling the effects of the missing bees. The state estimates $200 million worth of New Jersey foods need pollination from bees to grow. Many farmers say they now have to pay for bees to pollinate their crops.
