A New Jersey bill that would automatically fine drivers for parking or idling in bus lanes advanced this week, passing the Assembly Science, Innovation and Technology Committee.

The legislation would impose a $45 fine, increasing to $135 after repeat violations. The measure aims to reduce congestion, delays and safety issues across the state’s more than 250 bus routes.

A key change under the bill is enforcement. While blocking a bus lane is already illegal, the proposal would automate the process by installing cameras on buses to capture the license plates of violators. The images would then be reviewed by a real person before citations are issued.

The bill still requires approval from the full Assembly and Senate before it can reach the governor’s desk.
