New Jersey Republicans filed articles of impeachment against Attorney General Matt Platkin this week. Republican leaders in the state Assembly say that Platkin is going after the state police and is targeting political opponents.
"[Gov. Phil] Murphy’s AG has been pursuing high-profile cases to capture headlines, not criminals. It is evident his investigations lack merit by the number of charges that are ultimately dismissed by the courts," Republican Assemblyman Antwan McClellan
wrote in a statement.
Platkin issued a statement after the impeachment announcement was made.
“I am not going to respond to partisan political attacks. I am focused on the same priorities I have had since day one: driving gun violence down to historically low levels, holding social media corporations accountable for the harms they’re inflicting on our children, and protecting our residents — including by standing up to threats from Washington and fighting corruption, no matter who it offends,” the attorney general wrote.
Platkin recently took a big swing at a New Jersey political boss and missed. He accused powerbroker George Norcross of corruption, but
a judge dismissed the case this week.
Norcross is well-connected on both sides of the political aisle.
