New Jersey got its wish today; the federal government granted the state a waiver from the No Child Left Behind program.

No Child Left Behind was started under President George W. Bush and was designed to help close the achievement gap. It was hoped the program would get all children up to speed in reading and math by 2014.

Educators say problems with the program immediately cropped up, including complex regulations, excessive paperwork and reform stifling controls. Gov. Chris Christie says the waiver will allow the state to move forward on its plans to change how schools are held accountable.
