News 12 The Bronx visited the Grand Concourse to learn about its history as the Bronx celebrates its 100th anniversary.

The Grand Concourse has been designated a U.S. Historic District and is also on the National Register of Historic Places.

In the 1920s, the Grand Concourse featured the Andrew Freeman Home, named for the self-made millionaire whose trust money built it. The home served as a free residence for the rich who lost their fortunes. It eventually closed in 1938. Today, it houses the Mid Bronx Senior Citizens Council and its free community programs. A special wing is still run as a bed and breakfast.

The Concourse Plaza Hotel, which opened in 1923, was a first-class hotel located within walking distance of Yankee Stadium. The hotel hosted people like President John F. Kennedy and Babe Ruth, before it was bought by the city in the 1970s. It is now a senior citizens' residence.
