United Airlines is getting set to take on 560,000 passengers looking to get away for the Fourth of July.
News 12 New Jersey was given a look inside the airline’s Special Operations Center to see what goes on to allow those flights to get off the ground.
The team inside the United tower is managing 371 flights daily. They’re coordinating every flight touching down or taking off.
What goes on in the air is up to the air traffic controllers with the Federal Aviation Administration.
Watching over all of the action in the Special Operations Center is manager Tommy Morville.
“I’m in a world of professional problem solvers,” says Morville.
At every seat surrounding him, a zone or gate manager is watching everything play out on the runway or monitors of the gates and planes. They speak to flight attendants, caterers, cleaners and anyone who touches that aircraft. When there are bigger issues, like a lightning storm that can shut down runways, that’s when Morville and his crew shine.
“How well can we manage this tonight so that when grandma comes in the morning to go to Boston to see the kids, she knows that nothing happened,” said Morville.
In May, all of those working in United’s tower had to deal with a crisis that involved FAA air traffic controllers losing radar - and they couldn’t speak with pilots due to failing equipment.
Newark Liberty is still dealing with limits on flights because of those issues.“That limit is in effect through the end of October, so we are limited to 34 arrivals and departures every single hour,” said Jon Gooda, vice president of airport operations for United.
Gooda believes the limits are appropriate.
In time, the FAA will add staffing at air traffic control, radar will be enhanced and new fiber wireless communication.
