The recent wave of violence in Newark has prompted the city to go high-tech in fighting crime.
Newark Mayor Cory Booker announced Tuesday that the city will be adding 32 cameras to high-crime residential areas within a year.
?In so many ways, cameras help us not only solve crimes but in the prevention [of crimes],? Booker said.
Downtown Newark and other business areas in the city already have police cameras on the streets.
Newark will also be purchasing gunshot detectors, to pinpoint gunfire, similar to the ones used in East Orange. Newark Police Director Gary McCarthy said the cameras and detectors will give his officers important tools that they have lacked.
Some residents said the cameras may help, but they feel the equipment should be placed throughout the whole city to prevent crime from moving to different areas.
The cameras and detectors will cost more than $3 million. The Newark Community Foundation, a group of corporations and wealthy individuals, is raising the money.
