As investigators search for more suspects in the execution-style killings of three college students in Newark, the immigration status of one suspect already in custody is causing controversy.
Jose Carranza, 28, was arrested in connection to the killings and pleaded not guilty last week. Carranza, an illegal immigrant, was in court Monday for unrelated cases, including child sex charges and assault. Carranza was out on bail during the murders.
Some are questioning why authorities weren?t alerted to Carranza?s immigration status. However, under the law, authorities do not have to tell immigration officials about illegal immigrants until they are sentenced.
Newark Mayor Cory Booker said he does not want his police officers getting involved in immigration matters. ?In no way is it the obligation of the city police department to be going around doing the work of the INS,? Booker said.
Congressman Bill Pascrell believes the Newark murders highlight the need for immigration reform. Pascrell said there has to be more communication between local law enforcement and federal immigration officials.
