Newark officials say they seized over $30,000 worth of counterfeit clothing and shoes in a sting operation Thursday.
Mayor Cory Booker and Ron Salahuddin, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety, announced Newark's Safe City Task Force and the Newark Vice Squad were involved in carrying out the bust.
Police arrested Manual Molina, who operates a clothing business in the Bronx. They say his SUV loaded with an estimated $30,000 in fake shoes, jeans and other clothing articles.
According to Salahuddin, the Newark police received a tip last week from citizens in the clothing industry that a large supplier was delivering illegal items to various locations in Newark. A detective from the Newark Vice Squad contacted Molina by phone and coordinated a meeting to purchase counterfeit items. Molina was charged with trademark violation. He now faces fines up to $90,000 if convicted.
Booker says he's grateful to the citizens who called in the crime tip and Newark's law enforcement officers for their actions. "I am proud of these efforts, which are helping to build a stronger, safer, prouder City of Newark," he says.
