The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission will permanently close a Newark inspection station this weekend.

The Newark Inspection Station, located at 228 Frelinghuysen Ave., will shut down to make way for the construction of a new, expanded and "modernized" Newark agency, the NJMVC announced Wednesday.

The NJMVC will make accommodations to make sure that drivers don't have to deal with expired inspection stickers as a result of the closure.

"To reduce the impact of the closure, the NJMVC is automatically extending the expiration date of any valid vehicle inspection sticker that is expiring between April 2026 and July 2026 for three months," the NJMVC said in a statement. "This will give affected motorists more time to get their vehicles inspected either at a state or private facility."

The NJMVC says anyone who has an April extension sticker will have until July to get an inspection. May stickers will be extended to August, June stickers will be extended until September and anyone with a July sticker will have an extension to October.

Following the closure, NJMVC is advising drivers to use inspection stations in Secaucus, Rahway, Wayne or Paramus, or use a private inspection facility. More information is available at NJMVC.gov.
