Report: Newark-New York area ranked 12th worst air quality in US

More than 1 in 3 Americans live in places with unhealthy levels of air pollution, according to a report from the 24th Annual American Lung Associations State of the Air
When it comes to air quality in major U.S. cities, the Newark-New York metro area is 12th in ozone pollution, according to the 2023 report.
The report ranked the Newark-New York area:
- The 12th worst for high ozone days out of 227 metropolitan areas.
- Ranked 59th worst for 24-hour particle pollution out of 223 metropolitan areas.
- Ranked 71st worst for annual particle pollution out of 200 metropolitan areas.
New Jersey’s 21 counties all improved to their best-ever results for ozone smog, one of the most harmful and widespread types of air pollution.
When it comes to ozone related air issues, seven of the top 12 worst cities are in California, according to the report.
