Newark man arrested for stalking and attempted murder after Branch Brook Park stabbing

A Newark man is facing attempted murder and stalking charges after he allegedly stabbed a woman he knew and repeatedly showed up at her home unannounced.

Jose R. Soares, 45, of Newark, was arrested Monday, June 22, at Branch Brook Park by Newark police.

An arrest warrant was issued for Soares on June 19, the same day he was identified as the suspect in the stabbing of a female acquaintance.

In addition to the stabbing, Soares is accused of stalking the woman by repeatedly appearing at her residence unannounced, despite being told multiple times that he was not welcome there.

Following his arrest, Soares was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and stalking.
