Crews at Newark Liberty International Airport conducted emergency drills Saturday.
They simulated plane crashes to test the airport's emergency plan and response times.
Smoke could be seen pouring from a Boeing 757 plane as a result of a fake bad landing. Some of 120 volunteers posing as passengers ran to escape, while others were either carried away on stretchers or lying on the runway near scattered luggage.
Pat Foye, a Port Authority executive, said this particular drill was in the works for six months.
The FAA requires all airports to conduct emergency response exercises every three years, although Newark conducts its exercises annually.
