Newark?s first ever Safe Surrender program kicked off Wednesday, giving many fugitives in Essex and Union counties a second chance at life.
The program runs through Saturday. Fugitives can give themselves up at Bethany Baptist Church. Judges will be nearby.
About nine out of 10 people showing up are turning themselves in on misdemeanors, and 98 percent of those cases can be handled in a day.
The program is the second of its kind in New Jersey. An event last year in Camden netted 2,245 surrenders.
