Temperatures reached 96 degrees in Newark Monday, breaking a 44-year-old record.
The previous record high was 95 degrees on June 12, 1973.
New Jersey will likely see its second heat wave this year, as temperatures Tuesday are expected to reach above 90 degrees for the third day in a row.
Several New Jersey school districts, including Clifton, Scotch Plains and Hillsborough, have announced early dismissals Tuesday due to the high temperatures.
Temperatures are expected to cool down in the state later this week.
